First 5 Forever Program Inspires Lifelong Readers
Rockhampton Regional Libraries First 5 Forever program continues to thrive, providing vital early literacy support to children aged 0-5 years across the region.
Delivered in partnership with Council and the Queensland Government, coordinated by the State Library of Queensland, the program offers strong early literacy foundations through fun, interactive and engaging sessions.
Communities, Culture and Heritage and Deputy Mayor Drew Wickerson said the program continues to grow and play an important role in the lives of the local community.
“The first five years are the most important years when it comes to a child’s brain development, and First 5 Forever helps young ones make the most of that critical window,” Cr Wickerson said.
“Since we launched the program in 2017, we’ve seen incredible participation, with thousands of people attending sessions that encourage literacy through reading, singing and playing.
“All of our library branches offer dedicated weekly First 5 Forever programs focussed on reading, singing, talking and play and we are seeing consistent weekly participation of over 150 children and caregivers, which speaks volume about this initiative.”
Not only can the community and children take part in these free sessions, but library memberships are also available at no cost, providing access to a range of additional resources.
“Membership is completely free and provides access to not only our extensive collection of books but also a wide range of educational programs and welcoming spaces for all ages,” Cr Wickerson said.
“For families with children under five, signing up for a library membership comes with an extra special bonus – a free First 5 Forever library bag filled with goodies to kickstart their reading journey.
“Imagine the delight of a child receiving their very own library bag, complete with a beautiful hardcover book and other items that stimulate learning like a pencil case and crayons, a ball and rubber duck.”
First 5 Forever doesn’t stop at the library doors either, with over 700 free book kits distributed to local businesses and community services across the region since July last year.
“We believe literacy can be fostered in many different environments and it’s great to see so many local businesses join in, creating welcoming spaces where children can enjoy a book while waiting with their families,” Cr Wickerson said.
“Whether it’s a mechanic’s waiting room, hairdressing salon or a bank’s customer service area, these kits transform everyday moments into opportunities for literacy.
“The free book kits comprise of 15 picture and board books and are available for any businesses with a waiting room or customer service area.
