Free Flu Jabs Extended for WA Winter Health

With peak flu season approaching and thousands of influenza cases already reported, the Cook Government has extended its free flu vaccination program to ensure more Western Australians are protected during the colder months.

WA is on track to achieve broad flu vaccination coverage this year, with more than 763,180 Western Australians already vaccinated – including 311,890 during the free flu vaccine campaign alone.

With case numbers continuing to rise and the season yet to peak, the free flu program has been extended for another month, until 31 July, to give the community more time to access free vaccinations.

Influenza is a highly contagious respiratory illness that can lead to severe complications, particularly for children, older adults, and people with chronic health conditions.

The vaccine is especially recommended for people aged over 65, who are at higher risk of serious complications from influenza.

As of 15 June 2025, WA has reported 8,708 cases of influenza and 1,579 related hospitalisations. Children under 10 accounted for 18 per cent of hospital admissions, while adults aged 65 and over made up 37 per cent.

Free vaccination will continue to be available through participating GPs, community pharmacies, Aboriginal medical services, nurse practitioner clinics, corporate vaccination service providers and community health clinics.

Free flu vaccines are also available through the National Immunisation Program for people considered most at risk of severe illness, including:

The extended program supports the Cook Government’s commitments to keeping Western Australians healthy and easing pressure on the health system during winter.

While the vaccine is free, some providers may charge a consultation or service fee.

As stated by Preventative Health Minister Sabine Winton:

“Extending the free flu vaccination program means more people can stay well, avoid hospitalisation and reduce the spread of illness in our community.

“The Cook Government will continue investing in preventative health initiatives like this to ensure WA is the healthiest State in the nation.

“If you haven’t rolled up your sleeve yet, it’s not too late. By getting your free flu vaccination, you’re keeping yourself, your loved ones and the wider community safe.”

As stated by Health Minister Meredith Hammat:

“We’re extending this program so even more Western Australians can take advantage of free flu vaccinations this winter.

“Influenza is not just a bad cold – it can lead to severe illness and hospitalisation, particularly for young children, older adults and people with underlying conditions.

“I encourage everyone who hasn’t had their flu shot to book in today and do their part to keep themselves and the community safe.”
