Family and domestic violence doesn’t always happen in front of us – it’s behind closed doors, in homes across the country. And just because we don’t see it every day, doesn’t mean it isn’t happening. It’s devastatingly prevalent, and it’s on all of us to fight it, wherever we can.

I’m proud to come from a movement that fights for what’s right. Almost a decade ago, while I was ACTU President, the union movement stood up and demanded 10 days paid family and domestic violence leave – so survivors could have the time and space to escape and rebuild. And now, we have it.

Here’s Rosie Batty, Tanya Plibersek and I all the way back at the 2015 ACTU congress to discuss women’s rights.

This Family and Domestic Violence Awareness Month, let’s remember that it’s not enough to be horrified by violence. We need to act, support survivors, and create a world where everyone can feel safe in their homes.

As your Assistant Minister for Social Services and the Prevention of Family Violence I promise to continue fighting violence against women everyday.
