Geelong Takes Next Step Towards World-class Film Studio

The strategy will provide a clear roadmap for establishing and scaling a professional film and screen-production ecosystem in Geelong, including assessing the feasibility of a dedicated movie studio, and is expected to be delivered in the coming months.

Presenting an opportunity for Geelong to complement Melbourne’s Docklands Studios, the strategy will consider market demand from national and international producers, infrastructure and facility needs, workforce capacity, training pathways and future skills requirements.

The findings will guide future investment decisions, supporting advocacy to state and federal governments.

There is already strong local appeal and interest from the film industry, with Geelong having a history of attracting major screen productions, even without a dedicated studio.

Major local and international productions shot in Geelong include Nitram (2021), Foe (2023), Untitled John Tuggle Project (2025), Inside (2024), Force of Nature (2024), The Whistleblower (2019), The Dressmaker (2015), Surviving Summer (2024), Knowing (2009), and Ghost Rider (2007).

The project is a collaboration between Pelligra, the City of Greater Geelong, VicScreen, and Deakin University.
