Georges River Council Welcomes Councillor Gerard Hayes

At the July Council Meeting on Monday 28 July 2025, Gerard Hayes took an Oath of Office and joined Georges River Council as the newly elected Councillor for Mortdale Ward.

Council is pleased to welcome Councillor Hayes, following a countback process to fill the vacancy left by Councillor Ashvini Ambihaipahar, who was successfully elected to Federal Parliament.

Councillor Hayes brings with him a wealth of experience in community engagement and service delivery, having spent the past decade working in employment services and with Parklands Councils Inter-agencies in Western Sydney. He is also an active member of the Lugarno Lions Club and the Kingsgrove-Beverly Hills Branch of the Labor Party.

Prior to his entry into local government, he successfully ran a small facilities maintenance business. Councillor Hayes also holds a Certificate IV in Training and Assessment.

Having first moved to Penshurst in 1973 and later returning with his family in 2008, he has remained a committed local, serving as the President of the Penshurst Public School Parents and Citizens group.

As a long-term resident of Mortdale Ward, Councillor Hayes said he understands that bold announcements don’t always align with the views of the community. He is committed to increasing transparency, improving access to elected representatives, and delivering meaningful and measurable outcomes for the local community.

Georges River Council Mayor Elise Borg said “I extend a sincere welcome to Councillor Hayes and congratulate him on being elected to represent the Mortdale Ward. His deep local knowledge and long-standing commitment to community service will be an asset to Council.

“I look forward to working with him to continue delivering positive outcomes for the residents of Mortdale Ward and the broader Georges River area.”
