Getting More Homes Off Ground Faster

The Allan Labor Government is getting homes off the ground faster by streamlining the approval of nearly 150 homes in Brunswick and Springvale – where Victorians want to live – close to public transport, jobs and services.

Minister for Housing and Building Harriet Shing was in Brunswick today to announce the Labor Government has given the green light for two new housing developments – at Albert Street in Brunswick and Kintore Street Springvale.

The eight-storey development in Brunswick will provide 61 new homes in walking distance from Sydney Road and is close to parks, trams, Brunswick Station, shops, jobs and services.

All 87 homes at the Springvale seven-storey development will be affordable housing, located a short walk from Springvale train station, bus stops, shops, healthcare providers, and schools. These homes will be managed by a not-for-profit that provides homes for Victorians on low to moderate incomes.

Both developments will feature canopy trees to provide greenery, communal spaces, and all apartments will be energy efficient and meet the seven-star NatHERS rating.

Fast-tracked through the Development Facilitation Program, the projects are part of the Labor Government’s strategy to deliver more homes where Victorians want to live – close to transport, jobs, schools, and services.

To get more homes off the ground, the Labor Government recently announced the locations of more train and tram zones for homes, made it easier to build townhouses, and created fair housing targets for every local government area.

The latest Australian Bureau of Statistics data shows Victoria continues to be number one in the country for home approvals, home starts and home completions.

As stated by Minister for Housing and Building Harriet Shing

“What we are doing is working – Victoria continues to approve and build thousands more homes than any other state, and this pathway is one of the ways we’re making sure we get more good-quality homes built sooner.”

“While we’re focused on helping more young Victorians to rent or buy a home of their own, Brad Battin is missing in action – with no housing plan, no courage, and colleagues who are determined to block the homes that people need.”

As stated by Member for Northern Metropolitan Sheena Watt

“We’ve fast tracked nearly 150 homes, including 61 here in Brunswick – so that more Victorians can live close to their loved ones and the things that matter to them – public transport, jobs and services.”

As stated by Member for Mulgrave Eden Foster

“This new development on Kintore Street will mean 87 families in Springvale will be able to access affordable housing – close to the train station, jobs, and services.”
