Gold Coast Rail Facility to Boost Hundreds of Jobs

Gold Coast Rail Facility to Boost Hundreds of Jobs

New rail facility to support hundreds of jobs on the Gold Coast

  • Crisafulli Government supports hundreds of jobs on the Gold Coast as it delivers major contract to build rail maintenance facility.
  • New hub will help service expanded fleet of trains being built as part of Queensland Train Manufacturing Program.
  • Crisafulli Government focused on growing Queensland’s public transport system and delivering faster rail to the Gold Coast.

The Crisafulli Government is delivering for the Gold Coast with a major contract secured to construct a major train maintenance facility in Ormeau.

Gold Coast-based company ADCO has been awarded a $120 million contract to build a new rail maintenance building at Ormeau, which will conduct maintenance on passenger trains built in Maryborough under the Queensland Train Manufacturing Program.

The 20,000m2 rail maintenance building will support more than 100 jobs during construction and around 140 jobs when operational.

The Gold Coast facility will play a key role in supporting the growth of Queensland’s public transport network in the lead up to the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The Queensland Train Manufacturing Program was also subject to chronic financial mismanagement under Labor, with the former Labor government covering-up a $2.4 billion blowout in an attempt to hide the truth from Queenslanders.

The former Government also oversaw an estimated $3.1 billion cost blowout to the Logan and Gold Coast Faster Rail project, but the Crisafulli Government is getting on with the job of delivering, with work set to begin on the design and pre-construction phase.

Minister for Manufacturing Dale Last said the new rail maintenance facility was critical to servicing the growing number of trains being built in Queensland.

“The Crisafulli Government is delivering the support and new opportunities Queensland’s manufacturing sector has been calling for,” Minister Last said.

“We need to make sure the system can meet the growth of our train network across South East Queensland over the next decade, including visitors and athletes during the Brisbane 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

“This purpose-built rail facility is an important piece of the puzzle for the Queensland Train Manufacturing Program and will support the maintenance of the expanded fleet of trains being built right here in Queensland.

“Queenslanders haven’t forgotten Labor’s blowouts, delays and cover-ups which de-railed the Queensland Train Manufacturing Program and left Cross River Rail without the trains needed for its opening.

“The Crisafulli Government is focused on getting the Queensland Train Manufacturing Program back on track to meet the demands for rail transport over the next ten years and beyond.”

Member for Coomera Michael Crandon said the project was a win for the Gold Coast community and would provide jobs for locals well beyond the construction phase.

“More than 100 jobs including several apprenticeships and cadetships will be supported during construction of the rail maintenance building alone,” Mr Crandon said.

“I am pleased to see this contract awarded to a builder with a proud history of construction across the Gold Coast and beyond.

“Projects like these create purposeful job opportunities for locals and are an important training tool for young people learning their trade as an apprentice.”
