Government Reveals More Major Planning Changes

The Victorian Government has announced further major changes to state planning rules that will affect neighbourhoods throughout Boroondara.

In the commercial area of Camberwell Junction buildings ranging from 6 to 12 storeys with surrounding areas of up to 4 to 6 storeys in an ‘inner catchment’ and 3 to 4 storeys in an ‘outer catchment’ will be allowed.

Kew Junction has been named one of 50 ‘train and tram activity centres’ where planning controls will be revised for more higher-density housing.

The areas around Ashburton train station, and Willison and Riversdale train stations combined, have also been named ‘train and tram activity centres’. They join Hawthorn, Glenferrie, Auburn, Glen Iris and Gardiner stations where planning controls will be revised for higher-density housing.

New ‘deemed-to-comply’ standards will apply to townhouse and low-rise apartment buildings throughout Victoria. If the standards are met, a planning permit must be issued. Nearby property owners won’t be able to appeal the decision at the Victorian Civil and Administrative Tribunal.

City of Boroondara Mayor Cr Sophie Torney says the impact of the changes, when viewed together, ‘will change the heritage and character of our city forever’.

‘The disregard for the need to balance growth with respecting the quality of Boroondara’s living environments is inexcusable, particularly when we have demonstrated our commitment to planning for increased housing supply,’ she says.

‘What the government should be doing is working with us to invest in the infrastructure and services that support future growth in the right locations.’

Council will keep advocating to the Victorian Government, urging it to work with us and consult the community. We held our second community forum in February to share what we know so far.
