Did you see or hear the story on ABC Goulburn Murray today about the release of 120 stocky galaxias into waterways in the Snowy Mountains?
It’s an incredible success story for the fish species, which came under
threat after the Black Summer Bushfires and subsequent rainfall. While this release has happened away from our region, scientists at Charles Sturt University have been driving this work, breeding the fish at our local campus.
Getting these fish back into the wild is an important step in conserving the species and the new population will give this native species the best chance of surviving.
I had the chance of visiting the campus a few weeks ago, right before these fish were released to their new home in the mountains. It was incredible to see this to see the world-leading research up close and hear about the expertise of these scientists in action.
Well done to everyone involved!
