I was pleased to join with members of Australia’s refugee communities and representatives from Amnesty International outside Parliament House this morning as they called for the Government to raise the intake of people on refugee and humanitarian visas.
While the previous government announced it would increase the number of people who would come to Australia on humanitarian visas, many of those places have gone unfilled. COVID and visa backlogs have reduced the number of people actually getting to our shores. At the same time, the situations in countries like Ukraine and Afghanistan mean the demand on places is only increasing.
The new Government is yet to announce its position on humanitarian visas and we all know there is a delay on visa application processing generally. It is time to raise the intake and give people certainty.
