Helen Haines MP

In between sitting weeks I was so glad to get home to Indi and to drop into this training session at the Wangaratta Dragons Hockey Club on Saturday.

The club is training the next generation of coaches and umpires and they were lucky enough to be able to tap into the experience of Australian hockey legend Aaron Hopkins, who drove down from Canberra for the coaching program.

Aaron played more than 200 games for the Kookaburras and has won two Commonwealth gold medals in hockey – what a great person to learn from!

Community sport doesn’t happen without volunteers for roles like coaching and umpiring, which was why I was so glad to be able to support these sessions with a grant of $1000 through the Volunteer Grants program.

Nine people attended the coaching program and 18 attended the umpiring program, which is a strong turnout and will provide skills for years to come.
