Last week I was lucky enough to join thousands of people who have made the trek out to Dartmouth since the dam first spilled more than a month ago. It’s the first time in 26 years the dam has spilled and it could keep going until after Christmas.

The dam itself was an incredible sight and the roar of the water hits you the moment you get out of the car.

The amount of rain we have had recently has for the most part been really tough, and some parts of our community in Indi are having a really difficult time. It was nice to be able to hear some good news in among all the bad.

You can see and hear what the dam spilling means to this tiny town’s economy – business is booming at the pub (book early if you want a table!) and Dartmouth Community Groups are also selling bacon and egg rolls and sausages in bread from the Dartmouth CFA Shed, with a number of groups to benefit from the money raised.

I also spoke to John Scales, Aaron Scales and Irene Lewis of the Dartmouth Community Progress Association about the successes in the town, the challenges around access to fuel, and heard about their ideas for the town.

If you are looking for a day trip – head up to Dartmouth and see what everyone is talking about!
