One day you might find yourself driving through the West Gate Tunnel that is currently under construction, and even though you’ll be in Melbourne, you’ll have hundreds of Benalla locals to thank.

If you look up to the concrete walls, and down to the concrete road deck, you’ll be looking at huge precast components that have been manufactured right here in Indi.

LS Precast in Benalla employs more than 400 people in a variety of roles, all working to create these giant puzzle pieces that make up important pieces of infrastructure. It is the largest precast facility in the Southern Hemisphere and growing!

Locally owned, the work done at LS Precast goes around the clock, with day shifts and night shifts – sometimes you can see the lights from the Hume Freeway of an evening.

It was fantastic to go on a tour last week and I can tell you I will be looking at bridges and tunnels differently from now on!

While I was pretty impressed with the scale of the work that goes on at LS Precast, what impressed me most was the stories of the people. I had a great chat with Josh who started three years ago as a labourer, and has moved up through the ranks to be a supervisor. It’s opportunities like this for rewarding careers that are so important for our region.

Thank you to Corey, Leigh, Tim, Charles and Sarah for the tour!
