Sipping on your coffee in the Grant St. Grocer in Alexandra, you would have no idea that behind the café sits a huge food waste processor and industrial-sized worm farm.

I nominated this project for $7,000 grant funding under the Stronger Communities Program. Last week Eliza, Taya and Makayla, VCAL students from Alexandra High School, showed me how it works.

The waste processor takes all the organic waste from the café, chops it up and dehydrates it. It can then be used as fertiliser or worm food. In three months, it’s saved 2.3 tonnes of food waste going into landfill, the equivalent of one year of energy consumption for one household.

The aim is to eventually compost all the organic waste from Grant Street businesses. The next step is to find a market to sell this rich fertiliser.

I’d love to see a community project like this in every town across Indi. Thanks to Jodie, Kathy, Nigel and Alan who showed me around, and congratulations to the school, Landcare, Grant Street Grocer, Murrindindi Shire and everyone involved for building sustainability into hospitality.
