This morning Violet Town welcomed footy legend Michael Long as he makes his Long Walk from Melbourne to Canberra.

It’s 19 years ago now that Michael took the steps on the first Long Walk, making his way to Canberra to talk to politicians about closing the gap.

Now he is walking to Canberra but his call isn’t to politicians. It’s to every one of us, because every one of us has a vote in this referendum.

It’s about the people, not the politicians, he said. For us to vote with our heads and our hearts.

Who will love my First Nations People, he asked.

Michael asked us to be like the Tiwi shark totem tartuwali – to always move forward, and never go backwards.

I want to make that journey with him, and I hope you do too.

The Long Walk
