Today I stood with my crossbench colleagues to support a Bill introduced by Zali Steggall to ban lying in political advertising.
Many people would be surprised to know that the standards for advertising for products have more strict standards for accuracy and truthfulness than exist for political advertising.
It’s not good enough. If it’s not OK for a business to lie about what their product is, it shouldn’t be OK for politicians to lie in their advertising.
Especially as we expect to hear to the polls next year on the referendum on including a Indigenous Voice to Parliament in the constitution, this bill is incredibly important.
