Today I stood with Tony Mahar, CEO of the National Farmers’ Federation and Fiona Davis, CEO of Farmers for Climate Action to speak about my plan to support farmers as they take action on climate change.
Agriculture is a critical part of our country – farmers produce more than 90% of the fresh food we consume in Australia each year.
But farmers are already experiencing the effects of climate change and without adaptive measures, climate change threatens to reduce farmer profitability and productivity by 40-60% by 2060.
Farmers tell me they want to reduce their emissions and play a role in reducing national emissions but it’s too hard to know what action to take.
That’s why I have developed a plan to bridge that gap:
A network of 200 agricultural extension officers across the country to provide context-specific, trusted and neutral educational outreach services and advice on the technology, products and practices that will help farmers lower their emissions.
It’s good for productivity, profit, and the environment.
And the National Farmers Federation and Farmers for Climate Action back it.
My message for Murray Watt is that the Government should too.
