Wherever I go in Indi, people talk to me about the housing issues we face.
People who apply for more than 100 rentals before getting accepted.
People who want to move for work but can’t find somewhere to live.
People who live in fear that their rent will be raised and they don’t know what to do next.
Employers who want to expand their business, but can’t find workers because there is nowhere for them to live.
I know the issues we experience here in Indi are similar to those experienced across regional Australia, and I wrote this opinion piece for Australian Community Media as part of their series Young and Regional, focusing on the experiences of young people finding housing in the regions.
Finding somewhere affordable to live across regional Australia is difficult and we don’t hear enough from government about increasing housing supply, social housing spending, or using the spaces we have smarter.
I’m hopeful that I can speak to these issues at the Jobs and Skills Summit in Canberra over the next few days, to ensure the Government knows what we really need to support people and jobs in the regions.
