You meet some pretty amazing people in Parliament House, and this week I was fortunate enough to meet Ali Hazara and hear his story.
Ali is part of the Hazara community and travelled to Australia by boat in 2013.
Despite still not being granted a permanent visa, he has managed to complete his university education and is now living in Wodonga and working as a doctor at Albury Wodonga Health, through the fantastic Murray to the Mountains (M2M) intern program.
Ali spoke powerfully about his experiences and those of the Hazara people, who have long been the subject of persecution in Afghanistan.
I am proud to represent people like Ali and to keep working towards a more compassionate system for the treatment of refugees and asylum seekers in Australia.
