Some good news for fire-affected communities in Murrindindi Shire.

Residents in Alexandra, Caveat, Creightons Creek, Ghin Ghin, Gobur, Highlands, Kanumbra, Terip Terip, Whiteheads Creek and Yarck are now eligible for the Australian Government Disaster Recovery Payment.

After these areas were not included in the initial announcement, I raised this directly with the Minister and I’m pleased to see this outcome.

More towns will be added as assessments are completed across fire affected areas.

From tomorrow (Friday, 16 January 2026), people who have suffered major damage to their home, serious injury, or the loss of a loved one as a result of the bushfires can apply for a one-off payment of $1,000 per eligible adult and $400 per child.

Applications open from 2pm tomorrow at: www.servicesaustralia.gov.au/disastersupport

On the ground today in Alexandra today, I saw firsthand the severity of the damage caused by this fire.

It will be a long road to recovery, but today’s announcement is an important step in the right direction.
