Hobart Sewerage Upgrades Boost for Growing Population

Progress on the Selfs Point Sewerage Transformation Project is storming ahead, marked by a major structural concrete pour of more than 5,800 piles which are being drilled into the ground at the New Town site today.

Treasurer Guy Barnett said these types of major projects is exactly what Tasmania needs to future-proof the State, safeguard the environment and create jobs and economic benefits for Tasmanians today.

“The Tasmanian Government has been pleased to contribute $224 million to this project, which will have major positive implications for Tasmanians now and into the future,” Treasurer Barnett said.

“These upgrades and expansions will immediately unlock much-needed network capacity for 8,000 new homes in Greater Hobart, with the opportunity for another 20,000 in the future.

“Not only that, but it’s also supporting 3,420 direct and indirect jobs, generating $1.1b worth of economic activity and removing 132 tonnes of nitrogen and phosphorus from the Derwent River, providing favourable environmental outcomes for generations to come.”

The $314 million project is jointly funded by the Tasmanian Government and TasWater and remains on track for completion in late 2026.
