Honoring Essential Rural and Remote Health Workers
The Tasmanian Government acknowledges and thanks all of our rural health practitioners for the important role they play in providing vital health services to our rural and remote communities.
The Tasmanian Rural Health Conference 2025 is taking place in Devonport this weekend, which is being staged by the Rural Doctors Association of Tasmania, in conjunction with the Tasmanian Rural Generalist Pathway and The People Project.
Minister for Health, Jacquie Petrusma, said the conference theme of Collective Impact appropriately recognises the roles of multidisciplinary teams in delivering health care in rural and remote settings across Tasmania.
“I want to recognise the dedication, expertise and passion that all health practitioners show when delivering health services to our rural and remote communities, and delivering training to the next generation of rural practitioners,” Minister Petrusma said.
“Rural communities are the lifeblood of our State, and the work of our hard-working health practitioners to provide services to these communities is absolutely vital to their health and wellbeing.
“As GPs are the responsibility of the Federal Government, we continue to call on them to provide more support.
“Meanwhile, through our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, we’re supporting a growing rural primary health workforce, and there are a number of important initiatives underway to support this commitment.
“This includes creating new opportunities for Rural Generalist practitioners in our State’s public hospitals, enabling them to work to their full scope of practice wherever possible.
“Our Rural Medical Workforce Centre also vitally supports the training and education of Rural Generalists, assisting them to live and work in our communities.
“Importantly, our nation-leading Single Employer Model pilot program is continuing to be a success by providing GP and Rural Generalists trainees stability and support throughout their training by offering them employment through the Tasmanian Health Service.”
