Hospital Redevelopment Hits Major Milestones
Two major milestones have been achieved at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital (SCGH), as part of the Cook Government’s focus on expanding and strengthening acute healthcare services for Western Australians.
Works are now underway on the emergency department (ED) expansion, that will support the increasing demand of people requiring emergency care in the northern suburbs.
In addition, Cooper & Oxley has been appointed as the builder to construct the 10-bed pod for the hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU).
Designed to provide the system with further capacity to support the demand for ICU beds, the pod will be physically separated from the main ICU, allowing it to be isolated and quarantined if required.
Works will begin later this year on the project and will be undertaken in stages to minimise service disruption.
The ED redevelopment has been designed to meet changing community needs and accommodate increases in emergency presentations.
Dedicated areas will be established in the ED, including a new Urgent Critical Care Toxicology Unit, providing a separate area for alcohol and other drug-related presentations.
Works on the ED redevelopment will include:
Works are undertaken in multiple stages to minimise the impact on the ED and surrounding facilities.
Comments attributed to Premier Roger Cook:
“My government will never stop working towards making Western Australia the healthiest state in the nation.
“We have the strongest-growing economy in the country and the fastest-growing population – and that’s why we’re ensuring our hospitals continue to grow.
“These are significant milestones for our health system, our frontline workers, and for the WA community. These projects represent major investment in our healthcare infrastructure, ensuring that our hospitals continue to deliver world-class care for generations to come.
“Our population is growing, and with it the demand for emergency and intensive care services. These developments will improve patient flow, reduce pressure on the system, and ensure faster access to emergency and critical care.
“Importantly, these upgrades will support our dedicated healthcare workers, giving them the tools and facilities they need to continue delivering outstanding care.”
Comments attributed to Health Infrastructure Minister John Carey:
“The expansion of the ICU at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital is a critical investment into our health system, delivering an additional 10 beds to care for our sickest and most vulnerable patients.
“It will include state-of-the-art technology to support patient care and provide our incredible ICU staff with more space, better resources and the increased support they need to continue to deliver lifesaving care.
“We are building resilience by incorporating 10 new beds into the ICU, to ensure that when people are at their most vulnerable, they can receive timely, life-saving care close to home.”
Comments attributed to Health Minister Meredith Hammat:
“Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital is one of the State’s busiest tertiary hospitals, and upgrades to both the ED and ICU will ensure it’s equipped to meet the needs of our growing community, now and in the future.
“These upgrades are about putting our patients first, and creating a modern, more efficient space that ensures people can get the care they need, when they need it most.
“We know emergency departments across the nation are facing increasing demand – this investment will help relieve pressure for our frontline workers and create a safer, more supportive working environment for them.
“This is another example of the Cook Government delivering real, practical improvements to our health system by strengthening emergency care and building capacity where it’s needed most.”
