Housing Milestone Secures Tennant Creek’s Future

The Finocchiaro CLP Government has reinforced its commitment to providing greater support for Territorians in need of social and affordable housing.

Today, Minister for Housing, Local Government and Community Development Steve Edgington visited 12 newly built social and affordable homes in Tennant Creek.

It marks the completion of a joint partnership between the Northern Territory and Australian Governments under the Barkly Regional Deal, Housing Australia and Venture Housing.

“These homes are a critical step toward a more secure future for key workers who deliver necessary services to Tennant Creek and the Barkly more broadly, as well as the more vulnerable members of our community,” said Mr Edgington.

“We’ve made 2025 a year of action, certainty and security and housing milestones like this are key to our strategy to rebuild the Territory economy, strengthen our regional communities and restore our unique lifestyle.

“It is great to see another Barkly Regional Deal initiative being finalised and providing benefit to the community,” said Mr Edgington.

The $6.9 million partnership marks the first Territory-targeted project to be funded by Housing Australia, through the Australian Government’s National Housing Infrastructure Facility Social and Affordable Housing.

CEO of Venture Housing Company, Tim Sunwoo, said: “It’s an excellent example of collaboration and supports our remote region.”

Mr Edgington said five of the 12 homes, built by construction company Habitat NT, will be allocated to residents on the Territory’s 8-10-year social housing waitlist.

“The other seven will be affordable homes leased at subsidised rents to eligible working households on low to moderate incomes,” said Mr Edgington.

Venture Housing will commence construction of three new social houses in Tennant Creek in the coming month.

“Working with long-standing community housing providers such as Venture Housing provides real, on-the-ground results, ensuring more people have access to safe, secure housing when they need it most,” said Mr Edgington.

Construction is already underway on eight homes in Darwin’s northern suburbs, with work commencing in December 2024, and five homes in Gillen, Alice Springs, as part of a project to deliver up to 100 new social housing properties across the NT.
