Independent panel delivers report on phase out of live sheep exports by sea

Today the independent panel consulting on the phase out of live sheep exports by sea submitted its report to Senator the Hon Murray Watt, Minister for Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry for the government’s consideration. The report is a culmination of the panel’s consultation we have undertaken since we commenced in March 2023. Consistent with our Terms of Reference, the report includes consideration of and recommendations about:

  1. potential mechanisms to phase out live sheep exports by sea
  2. a suggested timeframe and options for implementation
  3. potential ways to support the transition.

Providing the report is a milestone. I thank my fellow panel members for their thoughtful deliberations and I extend the panel’s thanks to all who met with us, and provided submissions to aid our analysis.

Now that we have provided the report to Minister Watt for the government’s consideration the panel will not be providing further comment on our consultations or the report. Any questions about the panel’s consultations or report should be directed to the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry.
