Korean and Australian researchers connect at Tech-Bridge over miniature satellites
Researchers from the Republic of Korea and Australia are connecting over a common scientific interest – CubeSats, a type of miniature satellite with many uses including research, data gathering, communications and remote sensing.
Sixteen experts in CubeSat technology attended workshops, site visits and networking events at the Australia-Korea Tech-Bridge event in Sydney, along with representatives from:
- our department
- the Australian Space Agency
- Defence Science and Technology Group (DSTG)
- National Research Foundation (NRF) of Korea
- the Korean Embassy in Australia.
The event focused on satellite manufacturing and missions and instruments used for space exploration. Delegates:
- shared challenges and opportunities in CubeSat technology
- built new relationships and discussed potential projects
- gained understanding of the different facilities and systems in Australia and Korea.
Delegates visited UTS Tech Lab, a leading collaborative research facility, as well as space start-up incubator Wolfpack Space Hub.
The event was part of the Australia-Korea Technology Bridge (Tech-Bridge) initiative, a 2 year pilot program which strengthens links and drives partnerships in future-focused industries. It is a joint initiative of our department and the DSTG, in partnership with Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT (MSIT). The Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering delivered this year’s event.
Last year’s Tech-Bridge was held as a videoconference due to travel restrictions. It focused on using artificial intelligence to fight infectious disease.
The Memorandum of understanding between the Australian Space Agency and the Republic of Korea’s Ministry of Science and ICT helped inform the topics for this year’s event. The Australian Space Agency governs the launch of CubeSats in Australia.
