On this day in 1990, Carmen Lawrence became Premier of Western Australia, making her Australia's first woman state premier.

Lawrence went on to become a federal minister in the Keating Government, as well as National President of the Australian Labor Party.

She was also a co-founder of EMILY's List Australia, which has supported hundreds of progressive Labor women into Australian parliaments since 1997.
