Land Sale Boosts Cadet Training Facility in Launceston
The construction of a Cadet Training Facility in Launceston is on the march with the sale of land to the Department of Defence completed.
The facility will be built at UTAS’s Newnham campus as part of the broader redevelopment of the site.
Minister for Business, Industry and Resources, Eric Abetz, said the training facility was an important part of the redevelopment underway at the Newnham campus.
“We are seeing a tremendous amount of work in Launceston with the completion of the relocation of UTAS to Inveresk, the final stages of renovations at Albert Hall and work to improve the health of the Tamar Estuary,” Minister Abetz said.
“I want to acknowledge Premier Jeremy Rockliff’s advocacy in Canberra in February, ensuring the Australian Government invest further into Tasmania through the Australian Defence Force.
“The establishment of the cadet facility in close proximity to the construction of the Northern Suburbs Community Recreation will transform this part of Launceston into a bustling precinct.
“We want Tasmania to be the best it can be under our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future – and considered investments and developments get the tick of approval.”
Minister for Parks, Nick Duigan, welcomed the progress and thanked the Department of Defence for its investment into Launceston’s northern suburbs.
“The Tasmanian Government is incredibly pleased to see this project soon underway,” Minister Duigan said.
“It is a project that will train and engage young people and equip them with many skills for a successful career and life.”
A works tender package is expected to be advertised shortly, with construction anticipated to get underway later in the year.
The decision to relocate Defence cadet training to Newnham will unlock further development with a purpose-built barracks for the Army Reserves at Youngtown and future divestment of Paterson Barracks in Launceston’s CBD.
