Landmark Forum Boosts Tasmania's Cultural Access
Dozens of artists, arts workers and organisations from across Tasmania will come together for a landmark forum focused on building a more accessible and inclusive arts sector.
From Barriers to Belonging, a one-day forum at the Hedberg in Hobart today, brings together more than 70 participants to develop practical approaches to embedding equity and inclusion across the arts.
Minister for Arts and Heritage, Madeleine Ogilvie, said the forum marked an important step in strengthening Tasmania's arts sector.
"Embedding accessibility into everyday practice makes our arts sector stronger, more innovative and more reflective of the diverse talent in our community," Minister Ogilvie said.
"The Tasmanian Government is committed to delivering accessibility and inclusion in the arts sector, as part of its broader 2024 $1.5 million arts organisations election commitment to support a vibrant arts community in Tasmania."
Minister for Disability Services, Jo Palmer, said the forum highlighted the importance of ensuring people with disability can fully access and participate in Tasmania's cultural life.
"When arts organisations are accessible, audiences grow, communities feel welcome, and people with disability can participate on equal terms as audience members, artists, staff and leaders," Minister Palmer said.
"This forum focuses on lived experience and disability-led practice, helping organisations better serve their whole community."
The program includes disability-led artist panels, case studies, roundtable discussions and performances. Speakers include Tasmanian artists with disability and representatives from leading arts organisations, alongside national contributors.
The forum is organised by Morwenna Collett Consulting in collaboration with Arts Tasmania and supported by the University of Tasmania. While in-person registrations are full, the event will be live-streamed online.
