Lane Cuts, Closures Ahead for Light Rail Work

Lane Cuts, Closures Ahead for Light Rail Work

Following progress on major public realm improvements and track works at Northbourne Avenue and Alinga Street in January, further Light Rail Stage 2A works will occur on Commonwealth Avenue including the construction of the bridge deck over Parkes Way.

To ensure this work can be carried out safely, temporary road and lane closures will be in place along sections of Commonwealth Avenue and Parkes Way in February and March.

With multiple construction activities underway, works have been organised and scheduled to minimise the number of closures required, and closures will take place on nights and weekends where possible to reduce the impact on Canberra's traffic network.

Commonwealth Avenue closures

8pm Friday 6 February to 6am Monday 9 February (weather permitting) - Northbound ramp closure

The Commonwealth Avenue northbound ramp to Parkes Way westbound will be closed for watermain pipe installation works.

Detours for road traffic will be via Vernon Circle and Edinburgh Avenue, while pedestrians and cyclists can continue via the Acton Overpass.

8pm Friday 13 February to 6am Monday 16 February (weather permitting) - Southbound ramp closure

The Parkes Way westbound ramp to Commonwealth Avenue southbound will be closed. Southbound traffic can continue via London Circuit East and Commonwealth Avenue, and there will be no impact to pedestrians.

In the event of wet weather or other impacts, these works will take place from 8pm Friday 20 February to 6am Monday 23 February.

Commonwealth Avenue northbound road closures

Commonwealth Avenue northbound between Parkes Way and Vernon Circle will be closed:

* 8pm Thursday 12 February to 6am Monday 16 February

* 8pm Friday 26 February to 6am Monday 2 March

Northbound traffic will detour via Parkes Way on-ramp, to Lawson Crescent exit, Edinburgh Avenue and Vernon Circle. Southbound will remain open with one lane available, with the exception of the night of Thursday 12 February and 11.30pm Saturday 28 February to 6am Monday 2 March.

Pedestrians and cyclists can travel via the shared path over Parkes Way. Buses will be diverted, however no stops will be missed.

February to March - Night and weekend intermittent lane reductions

Sections of Commonwealth Avenue will be reduced to one lane intermittently in both directions between Parkes Way and Albert Street from:

* Monday to Thursday nights from 8pm to 6am

* Weekends from 8pm Friday to 6am Monday

These intermittent lane reductions are to allow for essential stormwater works for the light rail network.

A short section of Commonwealth Avenue southbound near Parkes Way also remains reduced to one lane until 31 March 2026 for essential Parkes Way bridge works.

Parkes Way road closures

Works are also underway for the new light rail bridge over Parkes Way. To safely carry out bridge deck pours, the following closures will be in place:

* 8pm Thursday 26 February to 6am Friday 27 February: Commonwealth Avenue will be closed in both directions between Parkes Way and Vernon Circle, with detours in place for on-road traffic including buses, and pedestrians. Parkes Way westbound will be closed between the Commonwealth Avenue on/off ramps, with detours in place. London Circuit East will be closed in both directions between Commonwealth Avenue and Constitution Avenue.

* 11.30pm Saturday 28 February to 6am Monday 2 March: Commonwealth Avenue will be closed in both directions between Parkes Way and Vernon Circle, with detours in place for on-road traffic including buses, and pedestrians. Parkes Way eastbound will be closed between Edinburgh Avenue and Coranderrk Street, with detours in place. London Circuit East will be closed in both directions between Commonwealth Avenue and Constitution Avenue.

These activities build on the major progress achieved in the January 'construction blitz' and mark another important step in delivering Canberra's expanding light rail network.

Getting to the National Multicultural Festival

Canberra is gearing up for another vibrant National Multicultural Festival this weekend, with plenty of ways to get to and from the event.

The best way to travel is to plan ahead and use public transport where possible.

Transport Canberra will run additional bus services from Tuggeranong, Woden, and Belconnen interchanges into the city, with light rail services also seeing increased frequencies to help attendees get to and from the event with ease. Bus and light rail travel will also be free after 6pm on Friday and Saturday evenings, making it even easier to enjoy the festival at night. Free shuttle buses will also operate across the weekend, running between the city and the Parliamentary Triangle, and between the City and GIO Stadium.

For those who choose to drive, allow for extra time and stay aware of traffic changes, particularly around the Commonwealth Avenue bridge works. And check available parking options in the city centre before you go.
