Lawrence Livermore Ranks in Glassdoor’s 2026 Best Workplaces
Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) has been honored with a Glassdoor Employees’ Choice Award, recognizing the Best Places to Work in 2026. The Lab ranked 12th out of 100 large employers in the United States, marking the seventh recognition the Laboratory has earned in Glassdoor’s award program since its inception in 2009.
Now in its 18th year, the Employees’ Choice Award is based solely on the input of employees, who elect to provide anonymous feedback by completing a company review about their job, work environment and employer on Glassdoor, the worldwide leader on insights about jobs and companies.
LLNL comprises a world-class workforce of nearly 9,000 of the best and brightest scientists, engineers, business professionals, innovators, skilled tradespeople, technical staff and more, many of whom are drawn to the Laboratory for its defining responsibility of ensuring national security and the safety, security and effectiveness of the nation’s nuclear deterrent.
“This recognition reflects the dynamic environment you create when passionate, skilled, and creative people come together to tackle some of the nation’s most complex challenges,” said LLNL Director Kim Budil. “Every day, our employees work to apply leading-edge science and technology to our important national security missions. At LLNL, we strive to foster an environment where people can contribute to their full potential, collaborate across disciplines and continuously learn and grow. Being named a best place to work reinforces that our investment in our people, their development and their wellbeing is making a real difference.”
Glassdoor’s average company rating is 3.7 on a 5-point scale; LLNL received a company rating of 4.2 during the review period and maintains a 4.3 cumulative rating. Other accolades include LLNL being the No. 1 government/government contractor employer and the No. 1 laboratory employer. LLNL is also No. 4 on the list of 13 large employers in the Bay Area.
“Even amid the uncertainty of 2025, these standout employers have shown resilience, sustaining high levels of employee satisfaction and trust as they navigate change,” said Owen Humphries, president at Glassdoor. “In today’s competitive job market, Glassdoor’s Best Places to Work award serves as a trusted guide for job seekers, spotlighting the companies where employees thrive while helping candidates connect with workplaces that reflect their values and career ambitions.”
Reflecting on the recognition, LLNL’s Chief Human Resources Officer Larry Durham emphasized the Laboratory’s commitment to fostering a thriving workplace for employees.
“Earning a place on the ‘2026 Best Places to Work’ list signals that our employees feel supported in doing their best work,” Durham said. “We are focused on providing competitive benefits, opportunities for growth and a culture that values collaboration and respect. Our goal is for employees to see the impact of their contributions to the national security mission and feel that LLNL is a place where they can build a rewarding and long-lasting career.”
Durham noted that employee feedback on platforms like Glassdoor is an important input for shaping the Laboratory’s priorities.
“The insights we receive directly from our employees guide where we invest and how we improve,” he said. “We listen closely to what they tell us about their experiences, and we work continuously to strengthen the systems, tools and programs that help them thrive. This recognition is both a milestone and a reminder that maintaining a great workplace requires constant attention and partnership with our workforce.”
On Glassdoor, current and former employees voluntarily and anonymously share insights and opinions about their work environments by sharing a company review, designed to capture a genuine and authentic inside look at what a specific job may be like at a particular company. When sharing a company review on Glassdoor, employees are asked to rate their satisfaction with the company overall, as well as key workplace factors like career opportunities, compensation and benefits, culture and values, senior management and work-life balance. In addition, employees are asked to describe the best reasons to work at their company as well as any downsides. To date, there are more than 2,000 reviews on LLNL’s Glassdoor page.
The Laboratory workforce continues to grow. Since the beginning of 2025, LLNL has hired more than 1,000 employees; there are currently more than 125 jobs posted on the LLNL careers site in a variety of fields.
