LGH Heating And Cooling Upgrades Hit Key Milestone

The major upgrade of the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system in older sections of the Launceston General Hospital (LGH) has reached another significant milestone with the completion of works in Ward 6D.

The 32-bed Ward has previously been the most affected by periods of higher temperatures and the completion of works will allow it to reopen on schedule in the coming days, delivering immediate benefits for staff, patients, and visitors.

Minister for Health, Mental Health and Wellbeing, Bridget Archer, said the upgrades in Ward 6D will provide significant benefits to both staff and patients, and a much more comfortable environment in that part of the hospital.

"The safety and comfort of patients and staff is the highest priority, so it is great to see works finished on Ward 6D, delivering immediate benefits," Minister Archer said.

"We are continuing to fix these longstanding heating and cooling issues at the LGH to ensure patients have a safe and comfortable experience when they are in hospital.

"Delivering these types of critical system upgrades within a working hospital is a highly complex task. As a result, the upgrades are being carefully staged and sequenced across rooms and wards to minimise disruption to clinical services and maintain continuity of care."

Patients from Ward 5D will now be temporarily relocated into Ward 6D to allow works to start on level 5 next week.

The remaining two floors in D-Block will be upgraded progressively throughout 2026, and each floor's new system will be commissioned as works finish, immediately delivering benefits in those areas.

The upgrades will deliver ducted air conditioning directly into patient rooms, improving safety and comfort during periods of warmer weather.

Upgrade works are also progressing well in Ward 4O (Maternity), with all patient rooms on track for completion by mid-2026.

All HVAC upgrade works at the LGH are expected to be completed by early 2027.
