Lithgow St. Beveridge Resurfacing: Detours Implemented

Mitchell Shire Council will be carrying out essential road resurfacing works on Lithgow Street in Beveridge between the Hume Freeway ramps and Old Hume Hwy.

The works will take place over three nights from Wednesday 11 June to Saturday 14 June (subject to weather) to improve the road surface and enhance safety for all road users. To minimise disruption, works will be completed at night between 7pm and 5am.

To facilitate these works, Lithgow Street will be closed between the Hume Freeway ramps overnight, with detours via the Hume Freeway and Northern Highway clearly signed and traffic controllers onsite to assist with entry and exit of the area.

In addition to these works, Council is working on a range of improvements to road infrastructure and congestion management in Beveridge and the surrounding area.

Council is collaborating with developers and DTP to implement interim traffic signals at the intersection of Lithgow Street and Old Hume Highway/Hume Freeway on-ramp. DTP has approved these works, and they will be installed in near future. Council will notify the community when a date for installation has been determined.

Council is upgrading the intersection of Lithgow Street and Patterson Street in Beveridge through a two-stage approach to improve safety and manage growing traffic volumes in the area. Stage one will see the installation of an interim roundabout, with works expected to be completed by September 2025. This stage is fully funded by Council at an estimated cost of $160,000 and will provide a short-term solution to support current traffic needs. Stage two will deliver a signalised intersection to accommodate longer-term growth. This stage is expected to be completed by 2028, with an estimated cost of $6.9 million. However, it will require funding through developer contributions and future grant opportunities.

Developers will be installing a roundabout on the west side of Hume Freeway at the Hume Freeway ramps and Lithgow Street. This project is being progressed with local developers and is expected to be delivered within 18 to 24 months, subject to DTP approvals and developer scheduling.

Further improvements, including a roundabout at Spring Street and Lithgow Street and improvements to the Old Hume Highway and Lithgow Street/Hume Freeway on-ramp, are also planned. These works, in partnership with developers, are also expected to be delivered within 18 to 24 months.

Lithgow Street, east of Spring Street, will be fully upgraded over the next 12 months to deliver an urban standard collector road. This will feature bus capable traffic lanes, footpaths either side and a dedicated cycle lane.

Beyond local road upgrades, Council is continuing to advocate for critical infrastructure projects to support the region’s rapid growth.

The Federal Government has allocated $900 million for the upgrade of Camerons Lane, with planning and design work set to commence this year. This project is essential to unlocking future urban development and ensuring smoother traffic flow across the region.

Mitchell Shire Mayor Councillor John Dougall said these works were a step towards improving road conditions and managing traffic growth in one of Victoria’s fastest-growing regions.

“These resurfacing works will ensure Lithgow Street remains safe and accessible for all road users. We appreciate the community’s patience while these improvements take place,” he said.

“We know that congestion is a growing issue across Mitchell Shire, and Council is working hard to deliver long-term solutions.

“From advocating for new traffic signals to supporting developer-led infrastructure projects like roundabouts, we’re ensuring that our roads are equipped to handle increasing traffic demands.

“Investment in projects like the Camerons Lane Interchange is critical to supporting our growing community. We urge the State Government to prioritise these works so residents can benefit from safer and more efficient roads as soon as possible.”
