Living Water Smart Expands to Aid Territory Homes

The Finocchiaro CLP Government is delivering practical cost-of-living relief for Territorians, expanding Power and Water’s Living Water Smart program across the Northern Territory.

Power and Water’s Living Water Smart (LWS) initiative was established in 2014 to help households and businesses reduce water use through practical education, water-wise tools and simple actions to cut waste and reduce leaks.

Originally delivered only in Darwin and Alice Springs, the program has now been expanded for regional communities, with advice tailored to the Territory landscapes, climates and water demand now available on the Living Water Smart website.

Minister for Essential Services Steve Edgington said the expansion would help Territorians take control of their water use, lowering bills while protecting the Territory’s water supply.

“Living Water Smart can now help Territorians save water whether you’re in Tennant Creek, on the Tiwi Islands or in the heart of Central Australia,” Mr Edgington said.

“Lower water usage means lower water bills for Territorians wherever you live, and it also strengthens security for our future water supply.

“Water is an important part of the Territory lifestyle. Territorians love to swim in backyard pools and spend time outdoors in our backyards and gardens, so learning to conserve water and reduce leaks is vital.”

The Living Water Smart program has been revamped with new, location-specific information, including a personalised water-saving calculator that provides simple tips to help Territorians save water and money.

Territorians can also access a Water Smart Plant Finder to help keep gardens healthy year-round, along with a new Irrigation Guide and practical advice on how to be water wise while still enjoying the outdoors.

As part of the expansion, the LWS program has installed data loggers to support leak detection in major and regional centres, with Power and Water teams completing consultations and providing education with businesses across the Territory.

Power and Water efficiency programs have exceeded initial Living Water Smart target savings, with more than 9,186 megalitres (ML) of water saved in recent years, equivalent to around 3,600 Olympic-sized swimming pools, or leaving a garden hose running for 582 years.

Territorians can find out more, use the calculator, and access water-wise tools and guides through the Living Water Smart website here.
