London Circuit East Reopens To Traffic This Weekend
London Circuit east will reopen to vehicle traffic in both directions between Commonwealth Avenue and Constitution Avenue from early morning on Sunday 18 May.
The opening of this intersection marks a major milestone in the Raising London Circuit Project and is a key step towards bringing the city closer to the lake, while construction continues on the western side – supporting the delivery of light rail.
London Circuit has been raised by six metres to meet the current height of Commonwealth Avenue. More than 60,000 cubic metres of fill was delivered to the site, with this section of the road marking a significant change to the southern end of our CBD.
The new at-grade intersection represents an important milestone for the project supporting the delivery of more housing and future investments in city shaping infrastructure.
New pedestrian footpath links and dedicated cycle lanes will be open in the coming weeks making sure more Canberrans have better walking and cycling paths throughout our city centre.
Finishing works, such as landscaping and tree planting, will continue into the second half of the year.
The completion of this section will also help reduce the pressure for road users on Constitution Avenue and ease congestion on the eastern side of the city. It will simplify access to buses, which will no longer be detoured around Vernon Circle.
Motorists should pay attention when driving on Commonwealth Avenue as a new set of traffic lights will be in operation at London Circuit.
London Circuit west will remain closed to on-road traffic to enable construction works for Light Rail Stage 2A. Signage is in place to safely detour the community around all works in the area as required.
