Lower Speeds Approaching Montague Street Bridge
The Allan Labor Government has lowered speed limits approaching the Montague Street bridge in South Melbourne, making journeys safer in Melbourne’s south.
The speed limit on Montague Street will soon be reduced from 60km/h to 40km/h between a 350-metre stretch from Munro Street and Buckhurst Street, to improve safety by reducing the likelihood and severity of crashes.
The reduced speed will provide drivers with more time to consider their vehicle height as they approach the Montague Street bridge, giving them additional time to stop.
The Montague Street bridge, which has a height clearance of three metres, is an important overpass for route 109 trams.
In 2016, the Labor Government installed two warning gantries on Montague Street approaching the bridge to alert over-height vehicles of the three-metre clearance.
Crews will be on site installing the speed signage in late May, with the new speed limit of 40 km/h to become legally enforceable once signs are installed and uncovered.
Drivers are encouraged to make sure they know the height of their vehicle prior to travelling, obey speed signage and always drive carefully.
These important speed reductions, which are being funded by the Transport Accident Commission, support the aims of the Victorian Road Safety Strategy 2021-2030.
As stated by Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne
“We know that reducing speeds also reduces the likelihood and severity of crashes, which is why we’ve made this important change to the speed on this stretch of Montague Street.”
“Road safety is a shared responsibility – drivers should always check the height of their vehicle before travelling and obey road safety and warning signage.”
As stated by Member for Albert Park Nina Taylor
“This safer speed limit will make sure that everyone travelling on or over Montague Street gets to their destination safely and smoothly.”
As stated by TAC CEO Tracey Slatter
“The new speed limit on this section of Montague Street is a great example of how a small change can have a big impact on safety in a busy road environment.”
