Major Milestone For No-Truck Zones In Melbourne’s West

The Allan Labor Government has awarded the contract for the camera systems that will take big trucks off local roads in Melbourne’s west once the West Gate Tunnel opens.

Sensor Dynamics will supply and install equipment to monitor six local roads to assist No-Truck Zone enforcement when the West Gate Tunnel opens.

Cameras will collect information to help the National Heavy Vehicle Regulator (NHVR) enforce No-Truck Zones on Francis Street, Somerville Road, Buckley Street, Moore Street, Blackshaws Road, and Hudsons Road.

These cameras will allow the NHVR to police and enforce the No-Truck Zones using state of the art technology to detect the type of truck in real time and instantly categorise them as either exempt or not exempt from regulations.

Exemptions will apply for trucks starting or ending their journey within a No-Truck Zone for deliveries, construction or maintenance works, vehicle repair, or vehicle sales.

With 24/7 enforcement of the No-Truck Zones, the West Gate Tunnel will take 9,000 trucks off residential streets in the inner west, improving safety, air quality and reducing noise for local communities.

It is one of a number of ways the Labor Government is getting thousands of trucks off local roads in Melbourne’s inner west.

Last year, the Government finalised a 42-year lease with the Port of Melbourne for the former Melbourne Market site – a deal that will get more trucks off local roads across the west and inject millions into the economy.

In September 2022, a Heavy Vehicle Monitoring Camera Trial monitored truck curfews and restrictions for trucks moving through Melbourne’s inner west.

The outcomes have helped determine the roll-out of the technology in the No-Truck Zones to ensure the ongoing safety and amenity for the community.

As stated by Minister for Ports and Freight Melissa Horne

“When the tunnel opens, No-Truck Zones will deliver take thousands of trucks off residential streets every day and provide industry with direct road links to the Port of Melbourne.”

As stated by Member for Footscray Katie Hall

“Through the West Gate Tunnel, our investment in truck ban enforcement technology and leasing the old Melbourne Market side to the Port of Melbourne, we’re getting trucks off local roads in Melbourne’s west and returning them to local people.”
