Mark Australia Day With Free Celebrations

Reflect, respect and celebrate this Australia Day with free events hosted by Townsville City Council.

Australia Day celebrations will be hosted at Jezzine Barracks, starting with the 5km Aussie Fun Run followed by a free Aussie brekkie from 8am.

Townsville City Council, in partnership with the Queensland Government will host the official Australia Day Flag Raising Ceremony featuring the Royal Guard of Honour, including the raising of the Australian, Queensland, Governor of Queensland, local council, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags and a 21-gun salute.

Townsville Mayor Nick Dametto said it was an honour for Townsville to welcome Her Excellency the Honourable Dr Jeanette Young AC PSM, Governor of Queensland and the Honourable David Crisafulli MP, Premier and Minister for Veterans, to this year’s ceremony.

“The Australian flag was first raised in Townsville 125 years ago, and this piece of history is recognised each year with our city welcoming our state’s representatives for the official Australia Day Flag Raising Ceremony at Jezzine Barracks,” Cr Dametto said.

“This event is a unique chance for residents to see the Australian Defence Force Royal Guard of Honour at Jezzine Barracks. The Royal Guard of Honour will be joined by the 1 RAR Band for the raising of the Australian, Queensland, Governor of Queensland, Council, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander flags and the 21-gun salute.

“This ceremony is a way for us to respectfully acknowledge our country’s culture and heritage as Australia’s largest garrison city.”

The Flag Raising Ceremony will be followed by the Australia Day Awards, honouring exceptional community contributions, and the Australia Day Citizenship Ceremony.

“It is always special to welcome new Australians to our country, but I am particularly looking forward to shaking the hands of our newest Australians on our national day,” Cr Dametto said.

“We have 50 recipients ready to become new Australian citizens and officially call Townsville home.”

The Australia Day Flag Raising Ceremony is presented by Townsville City Council in partnership with the Queensland Government. The ceremony is assisted by the Australian Government through the National Australia Day Council. Townsville City Council and the Queensland Government would like to acknowledge the Australian Defence Force for its support of the Flag Raising Ceremony.
