Minister Sidhu Meets Pakistan's Commerce Minister

The Honourable Maninder Sidhu, Minister of International Trade, spoke with Jam Kamal Khan, Pakistan's Minister for Commerce.

Minister Sidhu expressed his deepest condolences to Minister Khan following the bombing of civilians who were at worship in Islamabad and reiterated that Canada stands with the people of Pakistan during this tragic time.

Minister Sidhu and Minister Khan discussed the recent progress in Canada-Pakistan bilateral engagement, including the agreement to facilitate Canadian canola exports to Pakistan, which led to the first shipment of Canadian canola arriving at Karachi Port, Pakistan, on January 12, 2026.

Minister Sidhu noted Canada's interest in exploring new opportunities for Canadian businesses in sectors such as agriculture, clean energy and mining, as well as in diversifying and broadening trade with Pakistan. Minister Khan agreed on the importance of expanding trade beyond traditional sectors, noting Pakistan's export strengths in textiles and apparel and other areas. Minister Sidhu also reiterated Canada's commitment to holding a second round of negotiations toward establishing a foreign investment promotion and protection agreement.
