Moira Shire Ensures Yarrawonga’s Water Future

Moira Shire Council has taken a major step toward securing a sustainable and cost-effective water supply for Yarrawonga’s largest recreation precinct and cemetery, with the adoption of a new integrated water management plan for Victoria Park, the Yarrawonga Showgrounds and the Yarrawonga Cemetery.

Council has endorsed the implementation of a surface water extraction system from Lake Mulwala using Council-owned infrastructure—identified as the most secure and sustainable option developed in partnership with the Victorian Government and North East Water.

Moira Shire Council Chair Administrator Dr Graeme Emonson PSM said the decision reflects Council’s commitment to long-term water security and environmental responsibility.

“Water security is one of the most important challenges facing our region, and this plan ensures we’re investing in a solution that is both sustainable and community-focused,” Dr Emonson said.

“Using Council’s infrastructure to source raw water from Lake Mulwala will reduce reliance on the potable water supply while ensuring the community’s recreation spaces remain green.”

The Victoria Park precinct, which includes eight ovals, a P-12 college, a community garden, and the Yarrawonga Cemetery, is home to more than 15 community user groups. Since 2023, the site has relied on potable water for irrigation following the discontinuation of a backwash reuse scheme, resulting in increased costs and environmental concerns.

The new option will deliver 100% irrigation reliability and allow Council to own and manage its water supply assets, ensuring long-term control and resilience.

Council has also committed to exploring grant funding to implement a complementary stormwater harvesting scheme at Glanmire Estate, which would further enhance sustainability outcomes.

“Combining surface water extraction with stormwater harvesting is a smart, forward-thinking approach,” Dr Emonson said.

“It’s about making the most of every drop and ensuring our water strategy is as efficient and future-proof as possible.”
