Mount Isa Rodeo Welcomes Akubra to Red Dirt Family
Akubra Saddles Up as Presenting Partner of the 2025 Mount Isa Mines Rodeo
Mount Isa Mines Rodeo has announced a landmark partnership, with iconic Australian hat brand Akubra returning in 2025 as Presenting Partner — uniting two Outback legends on the red dirt stage.
Mark ‘Tommo’ Thompson, Chair of the Mount Isa Mines Pro Rodeo Board said the last time Akubra was officially associated with the legendary Mount Isa Mines Rodeo was back in the 1980s.
“After 44 years, the hat so proudly worn by generations of Australians, whether they ride or rope or work in the city, comes back to the famous red dirt of Kalkadoon Arena at Buchanan Park as a Presenting Partner, and Official Hat of Mount Isa Mines Rodeo. What a moment in time!” he said.
“Last year, the Akubra CEO Natalie Culina and her crew attended Rodeo to capture content for their national brand campaign – and they found the perfect story already unfolding. The backdrop of Buchanan Park, the strength and swagger of the cowboys and cowgirls, the heat, the pride, the dust, the authenticity, the freedom – it just fit. Like a perfectly worn-in hat. We are thrilled, emotional and so excited for what will be a reunion for the ages come August 8 to 10!”
Akubra CEO Natalie Culina said the partnership signalled a meaningful homecoming, bringing together two icons of Australian culture to the heart of the country’s rodeo scene.
“From cattle stations to rodeo arenas, Akubra has been engrained in rural Australia’s story for more than a century,” she said.

Akubra’s commitment to regional Australia is deeply rooted in its workshop in Kempsey, NSW where its hats have been handcrafted for over 50 years. During its 148-year history the brand has championed regional events from agricultural shows to equestrian events.
The history of Mount Isa Mines Rodeo runs just as deep. In 1959, a group of people with passion and an intrinsic sense of vision and potential, formed the Mount Isa Rodeo. Their aim was to put the new, remote town of Mount Isa on the map and raise funds for charity organisations in the new city. Today, through 66 years of whip-cracking dedication, the Rodeo has evolved into an event of legendary status, it has defied trends and challenges, with riders across the country heading north for the event, that boasts record prizemoney and more events than ever in 2025.
In 2025 and beyond, the partnership between Akubra and Mount Isa Mines Rodeo will not only be worn proudly — it will be celebrated in every corner of the red dirt arena, across every hat tip and in every moment of this world-famous rodeo.
The 2025 Mount Isa Mines Rodeo presented by Akubra takes over Buchanan Park, Mount Isa, from August 8–10, and promises three unforgettable days of grit, glory, and red dirt pride. This year’s event features live performances by Australian country artist Luke Geiger, the Indigenous Rodeo Championships, and the Open Finals on Sunday afternoon.
