On this day in 1895…Archie Cameron was born.
Cameron was the third Leader of The Country Party, a former Speaker of the House and Member for Barker in South Australia.
During WWI Cameron was a member of the First Australian Imperial Force. While fighting on the Western Front, he was gassed and suffered severe damage to his heart and lungs.
After the war he returned to Australia and took up farming near Loxton, in South Australia, where he became active in the newly formed Country Party.
In 1927 he was elected to the SA seat of Wooroora and entered Federal Parliament in 1934.
During his time in Federal Parliament he served as the Postmaster-General, Minister for Navy and Minister for Commerce.
He left the Country Party in 1940, joining the United Australia Party and the Liberal Party, and remained in Parliament until he passed away on 9 August 1956.
