Vale Paul Davey AM
We’d like to inform supporters of the National Party of the very sad news of the recent passing of our esteemed Party member, Mr Paul Davey AM.
It is uncommon for someone to be described as a ‘giant’ of politics without having served as an elected Member – but Paul Davey AM was just that. A man who for decades has guided and shaped the policy and politics of our Party from within, and in more recent times, assiduously researched, recorded and published the Party’s history since its beginnings more than 100 years ago.
For his decades of service to The Nationals, he was awarded the Earle Page Meritorious Service Award in August of this year. Introduced in 2005, this is the highest award bestowed by our Party to eminent individuals in recognition of their outstanding contribution to The Nationals, and particularly to its federal organisation and its role in the affairs of Australia. Paul was only the 12th recipient of this award, which underlines the significance of his contribution to The Nationals over many decades.
British by birth but Australian by choice – Paul made an immense contribution to our nation. Paul came to the world of Australian politics after a career in journalism, and in turn worked as an adviser to Peter Nixon and Doug Anthony before taking on executive roles within the Party as State Director in NSW and Federal Director (twice!).
In more recent years, Paul’s attentions turned to the important task of recording the history of The Nationals; he dedicated thousands of hours to researching and recording the milestones and markers of our Party in numerous books.
Family is at the centre of The Nationals, and we are so grateful to Lindie, Jim, Perin, Chick and grandchildren for sharing Paul with the party for so many years.
The Party extends our sincerest condolences to the Davey clan at this difficult time.
