National Roll Out Of Step Together

Step Together, a helpline and digital support service for those concerned about someone they know radicalising to violence, will begin operating across Australia today.

Step Together is a national website, chat service and phone line that assists the community to respond to the challenge of violent extremism. It provides resources to help identify the signs of violent extremism and information to support and safeguard those who may be vulnerable and on a path to violent extremism.

Using Step Together, those concerned about someone they know can receive online and phone support from specialist staff wherever they are in Australia.

As part of A Safer Australia – Australia’s Counter-Terrorism and Violent Extremism Strategy 2025, the Australian Government has committed $6.8 million over three years from 2025-26 to make Step Together a national service for all Australians.

Step Together builds on the successful New South Wales program and will be delivered using the expertise of the NSW Government to provide support and resources for Australians across all states and territories.

Close coordination between federal, state and territory governments is the most effective method to ensure early intervention and prevention efforts succeed, allowing us to protect Australia from the threat of violent extremism and build capacity in communities.

Step Together is available to individuals in all jurisdictions. Phone 1800 875 204 (available 9am – 5pm Monday to Friday) and visit Step Together.

If you see something suspicious or are concerned someone you know may be a threat to the community, please contact the National Security Hotline on 1800 123 400. If you or someone you know is in immediate danger, please call 000 to speak with emergency services.

“This vital resource will help parents and anyone else concerned about someone they know to get immediate support.

“We are building upon the success of the NSW Government’s Step Together program to divert and protect individuals from violent extremism before law enforcement needs to get involved.

“If someone you know is engaging with violent extremist material, contact Step Together or use their digital resources to take the first step towards keeping them safe and reducing harm to themselves and the community.”

“Step Together gives families and friends the tools they need to support a loved one who might be vulnerable to violent extremist influence.

“We are pleased to see this program which has been successfully running in NSW now being expanded across the country.

“This will help governments and communities work together to intervene early to keep vulnerable people and the broader community safe.”
