New Booking System, MVR Savings To Benefit Territorians

The Finocchiaro CLP Government is continuing to save Territorians time and money with a range of customer-focused initiatives across Motor Vehicle Registry (MVR) services.

From today, a new trial appointment booking system is being launched at MVR Darwin, Goyder Road, making it quicker and easier to access selected in-person services.

The new system allows customers to book appointments up to four weeks in advance for specific transactions that require face-to-face assistance, including:

Interstate driver licence transfers.Interstate vehicle registration transfers.Overseas driver licence transfers.First-time learner driver licence applications.

Appointments are available on weekdays between 9am and 3pm, allowing customers to skip the ticket queue and go directly to the appointment counter.

Bookings can be made online at service.nt.gov.au with the site fully mobile-friendly for convenience.

Treasurer Bill Yan said the initiative reflected the Government’s commitment to improving customer experience while delivering real savings to Territorians.

“We’re modernising MVR services and making it easier for Territorians to get on with their day. This trial booking system is about saving time, cutting queues, and giving people more control over how they interact with Government,” said Mr Yan.

“We’re also proud to be saving people money, whether it’s through a one-year free driver licence, holding registration fees, or offering new flexible trailer rego options.”

Key cost-saving measures currently in place include:

No increase to light vehicle registration fees until 1 July 2026.One-year free extension on driver licences renewed before 30 June 2025.New three-year registration option for light trailers (up to 750kg).

Almost 30,000 Territorians have already claimed the free 12-month licence extension since the offer launched.

From 1 January to 30 June 2025, any licence renewal, whether for one year or 10, will receive an extra 12 months free of charge.

If your licence isn’t due to expire, you can still apply for the free extension online or in-person before the deadline.

Additionally, over 1,000 Territorians have already taken advantage of the new trailer registration options, which reduce administration fees and help avoid future increases.

Most MVR services can be completed online or at participating Australia Post outlets. For full details, visit: here
