New Moorings Boost Abrolhos Visitor Access

New Moorings Boost Abrolhos Visitor Access

New boat moorings are now in place at the Houtman Abrolhos Islands, supporting growing tourism and economic opportunities at the popular Mid West destination.

The new moorings are located across five high-usage areas and will cater for tourism, recreational and commercial sectors, improving visitor access and safety for vessels.

Public moorings have been installed at Gun Island, North Island, Pelsaert Island and Middle Island, with a new commercial mooring at White Bank.

The new installations will be complemented by a new mooring booking system which is currently in development.

While the new system is under development, boat skippers are reminded to complete the online notification form with the Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development before they visit.

The new moorings are part of the Cook Government’s $8.1 million investment in infrastructure upgrades at the Abrolhos.

Planning is underway for a new public jetty and adjacent visitor area on Rat Island.

Designs are currently being finalised for both projects with the tenders for the construction expected to be released in coming months.

As stated by Fisheries and Mid West Minister Jackie Jarvis:

“These five new moorings are a huge boost for the Mid West region and will provide local fishing and aquaculture businesses with opportunities to diversify and explore the potential for ecotourism.

“With one mooring dedicated for commercial access, and four public moorings, recreational fishers and divers, the commercial industry, research and education vessels, tourism providers and day visitors from Geraldton can all enjoy what the Abrolhos has to offer.”

As stated by Regional Development Minister Stephen Dawson:

“By improving infrastructure and access to the Abrolhos Islands, the Cook Government is creating new jobs and economic opportunities in the Mid West.

“It builds on our government’s work to grow the potential of the Abrolhos, including new lease agreements which were finalised earlier this year that enable ecotourism customers to stay overnight in short-term hosted accommodation.”

As stated by Tourism Minister Reece Whitby:

“The Cook Government’s delivery of new moorings at the Houtman Abrolhos Islands is another step towards developing sustainable tourism at this stunning destination.

“It is exciting to see these initiatives taking shape, balancing the tourism experience with long-term sustainability of the Islands and marine environment.”
