New Northern Mental Health Precinct Progress Advances
Construction of the purpose-built Northern Mental Health Precinct is a step closer, with tenders called for site preparation works for the new facility.
The dedicated mental health facility, to be located at 52 Frankland Street, is part of the Tasmanian Government’s plan to bring the $90 million Launceston General Hospital Precinct Masterplan to life.
Minister for Mental Health and Wellbeing, Roger Jaensch, said the Tasmanian Liberal Government is committing record investment to improve the mental health of our community as part of our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future.
“An enormous $320 million is being invested to transform our mental health system through our Mental Health Infrastructure Program,” Minister Jaensch said.
“The new Northern Mental Health Precinct will feature a 30-bed mental health in-patient unit to replace the current Northside Unit and provide essential community mental health services including a Recovery College, five bed Short Stay Unit and a Safe Haven.
“Site preparation works, which will include the demolition of existing vacated buildings on the site, are expected to begin in mid-2025 and take approximately three months to complete.
“This contemporary mental health precinct will include car parking for staff and consumers to park on the site with easy access to the building, and the design retains the existing oak trees on the site.”
Access to the Viewpoint Car Park at 52 Frankland Street will be retained during the site preparation works with additional pedestrian safety measures to be put in place.
Work to minimise the impacts on nearby properties will get underway once the contractor is appointed, and stakeholders will be informed of any changes to local traffic or pedestrian conditions as the works progress.
The project team have identified materials within the existing buildings that can be salvaged and made available for reuse.
A Development Application for the construction of the new facility will be submitted to the City of Launceston in mid-2025, with construction expected to begin in early 2026 and be complete by late 2027.
