New Park And Ride Coming To Launceston
Tasmanians living in and around Launceston are on track for a new park and ride facility, with two preferred sites now identified and being progressed.
Following assessment of multiple sites, the locations—one in Mowbray and one in Prospect—have been agreed for further investigation by the Tasmanian Government and the City of Launceston, which own both sites.
Minister for Transport, Eric Abetz, said that park and ride facilities have been shown to increase public transport usage, providing commuters with a comfortable and easy alternative to driving.
“I’m pleased to announce the first site for investigation will be on Invermay Road in Mowbray which has a high level of public transport frequency,” Minister Abetz said.
“The second will be in Prospect, on the Westbury Road corridor which is an important bus corridor for this growing community.
“Work is now underway on concept designs for the two sites and if the locations work as required, a decision on whether to proceed will be made in consultation with council,” he said.
More details on the location of the sites and consultation with the community will occur once further discussion with Council on concept designs are completed.
A consultant has also been engaged to develop park and ride feasibility studies for four other corridors across the Launceston area.
Minister Abetz said this work would guide identification and selection of sites for possible future park and ride locations in the region.
“All sites are being considered against a base framework which includes location, potential patronage levels, a site’s fitness for a park and ride, value for money including any land acquisition costs and proximity to the CBD and existing public transport services,” Minister Abetz said.
“Should current planning return favourable results we would reasonably expect to see construction start on the first site in 2026.
“Through our 2030 Strong Plan for Tasmania’s Future, we’re continuing to work hard to ensure Tasmanians have the services and infrastructure that they deserve.”
