New Secretary Appointed To Lead Department Of Education
The Victorian Government has appointed Tony Bates PSM as the new Secretary of the Department of Education.
Tony has been Acting Secretary and brings to the role more than five years’ experience as Deputy Secretary at the Department of Education. He has also held senior roles at Justice and Regulation, Premier and Cabinet, and Victoria Police.
Tony chairs the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority and is a Fellow of the Institute of Public Administration Australia. He also sits on IPAA’s Finance, Risk and Audit Committee.
In 2016, he received the Public Service Medal for outstanding service at Victoria Police.
Tony replaces Jenny Atta PSM, who became Secretary of the Department of Health in February.
As stated by Premier Jacinta Allan
“I congratulate Tony on his appointment and look forward to their new leadership and expertise driving the Department of Education forward.”
“We’re making sure that every Victorian child, no matter where they live, can rely on a great public education from early childhood, primary and secondary school to further education.
“Tony will lead the department’s work with expertise and dedication, to make sure Victorian kids get the support, opportunities and education they need to succeed in the Education State.”
