Next Government Must Protect Oceans for Future
The Australian Marine Conservation Society (AMCS) calls on political parties, Independents and candidates to commit to strong action for Australia’s coasts and oceans, if elected to the next Australian Parliament, following the announcement of the federal election today. Action for the oceans during the next term of government is critical for the wildlife and ecosystems loved by Australians and people around the world. This is about our way of life and identity, our cultural heritage and our economy.
AMCS Chief Executive Paul Gamblin said: “Our fragile oceans and coasts need fearless leaders. This election, we need visionary, resolute leadership that prioritises our planet’s future, not just the next election cycle. Our oceans and our future depend on it.
“Marine heatwaves driven by climate change have been wreaking havoc in our oceans, with coral bleaching impacting both sides of the country from the Great Barrier Reef to Ningaloo in the west. Meanwhile the Great Southern Reef kelp forests are being decimated at an alarming rate.
“Just this week, both major political parties aligned to weaken nature laws, ramming through legislation that tips the endangered Maugean skate further towards extinction, to placate big industry.
“Our oceans and wildlife will feel the consequences of this devastating move. We expect our leaders to stand up to narrow corporate interests and instead govern for the greater good.
“Australians need a government that will introduce and enact strong nature laws without delay – laws that restore marine habitats, address climate change and protect not just the endangered Maugean skate, but beloved and threatened species such as Australian sea lions, snubfin dolphins and sawfish..
“Bold action on climate change is essential. This means championing renewable energy sources that protect ocean nature and halting offshore drilling, especially in sensitive areas such as Western Australia’s Scott Reef and off the Victorian surf coast.
“AMCS urges the next Australian Government to allocate at least 1% of the federal budget to protecting and restoring nature, and stresses the importance of recognising the cultural and intrinsic value of Australia’s marine ecosystems.
“We need leaders who will defend our coasts, oceans and marine life so that future generations can experience the beauty and wonder of our marine world. Investing in nature’s future is an investment in the health and wellbeing of people and our economy.
“This election we must choose leaders who will act with courage and vision. The time for half measures is over,” Mr Gamblin said.
